นครเปงจาล พระยากุศราช เป็นเจ้าเมือง มีน้องสาวรูปงามชื่อนางสุมุณฑา วันหนึ่งนางไปชมสวน มียักษ์กุมภัณฑ์มาอุ้มเอานางไปยังเมืองอโนราช แล้วแต่งตั้งเป็นมเหสี พระยากุศราชเสียใจมาก จึงออกบวชติดตามไปถึงเมืองจำปา และได้พบธิดาทั้ง ๗ ของนันทะเศรษฐี จึงสึกและขอนางเป็นมเหสี พระยากุศราชเรียกมเหสีทั้ง ๗ มา ให้ทุกนางตั้งจิตอธิษฐานขอเอาลูกชายผู้มีบุญฤทธิ์มาเกิด เพื่อจะได้ติดตามเอานางสุมุณฑากลับคืนมา พระอินทร์ได้ส่งเทพ ๓ องค์มาเกิดในท้องนางทั้งสอง องค์หนึ่งเกิดเป็นสีโห (หัวเป็นช้าง) เกิดในท้องเมียหลวง องค์สองศิลป์ชัย (เป็นคน) และสังข์ทอง (หอยสังข์) เกิดในท้องเมียน้อย เมียหกคนได้คนสามัญมาเกิด โหรหลวงได้ทำนายว่าลูกที่เกิดจากเมียน้อยและเมียหลวงจะเป็นผู้มีบุญ คำทำนายของโหร ไม่เป็นที่พอใจของมเหสีทั้งหก มเหสีทั้งหกจึงว่าจ้างให้โหรทำนายใหม่ โหรเห็นแก่อามิสสินจ้างจึงทำนายใหม่ว่าลูกที่เกิดจากมเหสีทั้ง ๖ มีฤทธิ์เดชมาก ลูกที่เกิดจากนางจันทาและนางลุน เป็นทั้งคนทั้งสัตว์ เกิดมาอาภัพอัปปรีย์และจัญไร เมื่อประสูติ พระยากุศราชจึงขับไล่นางจันทา นางลุน พร้อมพระโอรสออกจากเมือง พระอินทร์เล็งเห็นความทุกข์ยาก จึงมาเนรมิตเมืองไว้ต้อนรับให้ได้อยู่อาศัย ยังเมืองนครศิลป์แห่งนี้ พระยากุศราชเมื่อขับไล่เมียแล้วให้โอรสทั้งหกไปตามเอาน้องสาวของตนคืนจากยักษ์กุมภัณฑ์
